Chris
Benoit Gets Real(-Scanned), Plus Famous Scenes
I have
to admit to being disappointed. The latest assortment of WWF
action figures from Jakks Pacific only features ONE new guy.
The other FIVE figures into the grouping are simply re-decos
of other, pre-existing figures. For the record, they are the
upteenth Rock, Jericho, Undertaker, Jeff Hardy, and X-Pac.
I realize that Stevie Richards, Raven, Eddie Guerrero, Saturn,
Lita and Albert are all due later in the year, but there is
still a vast reserve of untapped WWF personalities out there
that could make for cool Real-Scan figures (among them are
Molly Holly, Trish Stratus, Essa Rios, or any other member
of Right To Censor).
That said,
let's take a closer look at the plastic Chris Benoit.
Benoit:
I have to hand it to Jakks; the Real-Scan faces are consistently
great. And yes, he's missing that tooth. On the downside,
they've made the Canadian Crippler way too tall. One of the
impressive things about Benoit is that as a small guy, he
can still hang with the big men. Well, this figure would have
you think that he's as tall as The Rock. That's unfortunate,
because otherwise he'd be really great.
Fans of
WWF toys should definitely pick-up Benoit, but the rest of
the assortment is something that you can miss without guilt.
Here's hoping that Jakks works in more diversity before they
suffer like WCW's Toy Biz line.

Benoit, 3 Bananas; the others, 2
Famous
Scenes: I'd also like to note a rather novel new series
from Jakks, a group of two-packs labelled Famous Scenes. In
this sense, I don't mind figures being resued, because the
intent is to recapture particularly celebrated matches with
figures of the wrestlers as they looked at that point.
Two of
the two-packs are decent, one featuring The Rock vs. HHH,
the other featuring the Hardys. However, the third is fantastic.
It's Mick Foley vs. The Undertaker from King of the Ring in
1998. In case you didn't know, that's the PPV where Mick and
'Taker had their legendary Hell in the Cell match. Taker still
looked evil and cool, and Mick took the biggest bumps of his
wrestling career (as documented in Beyond the Mat and
Foley's own book). The Foley and Taker two-pack is a must
for hardcore fans, especially in light of the fact that Jakks
has also released a Hell in the Cell ring set.

among his recommended figures is a "Bad Gimmicks" line, featuring
Al Snow as Avatar and Justin Credible as Aldo Montoya. Email
