Spider-Man by Activision
for PSOne
Review

Being
way behind the times, I just recently picked up an original
Playstation. Frankly, there's not enough about the PS2 that's
gotten me excited yet, but who needs that system when the
PS One still has so many classic games available?
Spider-Man
has supplanted my all-time favorite superhero video games
(Batman Returns and Adventures of Batman and Robin
for Super NES, perhaps even the original Spider-Man
for Sega Genesis) as the best game of all time. From the catchy
surf take-off on the 60's theme in the opening to the attention
to detail of the characters to battling in a 3D world to Stan
Lee's narration, this game has it all. The basic premise of
the game has Spidey getting framed for stealing a machine
from the reformed Doctor Otto Octavius. Spidey must clear
his name while fighting a rogue's gallery of villains.
Gameplay
is great in this game, and you really get a sense of what
it's like to be the wallcrawler. You can go up the sides of
buildings and underneath ledges. You can crawl on high ceilings,
drop down to take out a bad guy, and thwip right back up again
undetected. Swinging on webs is a breeze, and Spidey's natural
agility makes him a very graceful and easy character to control.
He's also got a ton of fighting tricks up his sleeve, from
shooting web balls to creating web shields to tying up crooks
with web restraints.
The
extra details are really what make this game fun. Although
they don't play a part in the game, Mary Jane, Johnny Storm,
the Punisher, Daredevil, and Black Cat all appear in different
movies throughout the game, and some of the Avengers make
a cameo appearance at the end. You're also able to build a
virtual comic book collection by picking up power-ups throughout
the game. These unlock costumes, such as the black symbiote
costume, the Scarlet Spider costume, and more. What's also
neat is that for each comic you pick up during the game, you
can go to the menu screen to look at the cover and read a
little bit about the significance of that book to Spidey's
life.
The sounds
are awesome, graphics are awesome... there's nothing about
this game that I don't enjoy. Since it's also out now for
Dreamcast and Nintendo 64, no matter what you own, it's about
time you went out and got this game. Coming
soon: Spider-Man 2 with The Shocker and other new villains
and a Playstation 2 Spider-Man game based on next summer's
film.
