Hellboy Figure

Two
years ago (or was it three?), I saw the mock-up of the Hellboy
action figure at the Wizard World Comic Convention in Chicago.
I was told by the gent at the table that it would be out by
January of the following year. Perhaps he was a little optimistic.
It came out March 14. Other than that, it is a great figure.
Previous
Big Blast figures from Graphitti have included Kevin Matchstick
from Matt Wagner’s Mage, Hunter Hose from Matt Wagner’s
Grendel and Mike Allred’s Madman. Each was awesome.
While not too articulated, they were very poseable (especially
Hunter Rose). The sculpting was excellent. The accessories
were dead-on. And the price was agreeable. The Hellboy figure
continues this tradition of excellence.
Mike Mignola’s
“World’s Greatest Paranormal Investigator” comes to life in
plastic. From his huge stone fist, to his tiny cloven hoofs
to his ill-fitting trench coat, Hellboy is perfect. I keep
expecting him to say “Oh, Crap!”
He comes
equipped with his tan overcoat, huge freaking pistol and sword.
He also has two, interchangeable left hands (one holds the
sword, the other holds the pistol). Much like the real Hellboy,
the pistol has a habit of falling out of its holster (and,
much like the real Hellboy, he’ll probably never be able to
shoot the broadside of a barn either).
His facial
expression and posture are perfect. The paint job is also
great. My figure is the variant with the BPRD T-shirt, instead
of the standard bare-chested one. I don’t think either is
superior. The price is the same for both and which one you
buy will depend on what’s available and individual tastes.
I would
highly recommend this figure to fans of Mignola’s Hellboy.
Now, if he’d just manage to write a more regular Hellboy title.
I hate waiting, but for Hellboy, I make an exception.
For those who are curious, go to www.graphittidesigns.com
for more information. Also of note, Mike Mignola will be releasing
a new Hellboy series titled “The Conqueror Worm” in May.
