When Wonder
Woman got relaunched as a title in 1987, DC did Diana
the wonderful service of giving her to the masterful George
Perez. His myth-inspired takes made for a great, grandly heroic
title. Perez also totally revamped classic Wondy nemesis The
Cheetah, as well as giving his own unique and powerful take
on the God of War, Ares. Flash-forward several years, and
the excellent Mike Deodato Jr. was employed to design the
look of Artemis, Diana’s temporary replacement. These three
background characters are the latest to get the DC Direct
treatment, and I’ll be damned if they haven’t done it again.
Overview:
I’ve heard some people questioning why DC Direct would
make an assorment based on WW characters when other books
are “hotter” at the moment. My friends, DC Direct is obviously
about “completeness”. They want to highlight great moments
from their entire history, and they want to honor the works
of fine creators. Plus, they know what makes dynamic figures.
Ares:
The God of War is the king of this bunch. With huge presence
and Perez-style detail, Diana’s major early enemy couldn’t
possibly have received a better respresentation. Duly accessorized
with a huge battle axe and sword, Ares looks as if he strode
grimly and directly from the pages. He’s also fairly articulated,
with nine points.

Cheetah:
Fans of the Legion of Doom should dig this one. The Perez
version of this character made her much more animalistic,
and that quality is certainly captured here. Cheetah also
bends at the knees, which is a rareity for DC Direct female
figures. She may not be a major league character in today’s
DCU, but she’s a very well done sculpt.
Artemis: I’m somewhat split on Artemis. I mean, she
looks spectacular. The face is easily the best female face
that DC Direct has managed to capture so far. The bow and
sword are also accurate accessories, and well-done in their
own right. However, below Artemis’s waist, the whole figure
is one solid piece. Why, oh, why can’t this figure have articulated
knees? It wouldn’t hurt anybody. Regardless, if you buy your
figures to display, then you couldn’t ask for a better visual
job than Artemis.
Overall,
DC’s nailed another set of great looking figures. I would
like to lodge one more minor complaint, though: Less twist
ties, please. Thanks. Now when do we get The Authority in
plastic form?

to see Channon and Yelena from “Transmet” get figures, but
he knows that probably won’t happen.
