Buffy the Vampire Slayer Series II figures

Staking a Claim

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of the best shows on TV. That much is fact. Funny, smartly written, action-packed, and loaded wall to wall with hot chicks and attractive men, it's got something for every fan of dark fantasy. M.A.C. captured the flavor of the series in their first assortment of figures, doing justice to the likenesses of Buffy, Willow, Angel and The Master. They recently released a second series directly to comic shops and specialty stores.

Overall: The second assortment shares the unifying conceit of bases that have a headstone shape. This contributes, of course, to providing a fun, gothic atmosphere like the series itself. All of their accessories are nicely designed and make sense, especially Oz's guitar.

Buffy II: While I still like the original Buffy better, this is quite a good figure. This version of The Mayor of Buffonia has straight hair and a more fashionable clothing ensemble. The face is again nicely done, but it's not quite the "perfect" Buffy that M.A.C. may yet be capable of.

Giles: Certainly an early contender for Best-Dressed Figure of the Year, Giles is nattily decked out in a vest and tie. Anthony Stewart Head has distinctive features, and M.A.C. has successfully imbued those features into this figure. Even if you're just a casual fan of the show, this would be a nice addition to a collection.

Oz: I miss Seth Green (the artist also known as Scott Evil). Still, those Oz may have departed the show, we have this swell figure. This depiction of Mr. Green is certainly superior to McFarlane Toys Scott Evil. It's very cool.

This series carries on the tradition of fine M.A.C. sculpting. I wish they could churn out their product a little faster, but the results are definitely worth a look.

I should also note that at this writing, a Spike figure is available exclusively through Fandom.com. William the Bloody is represented in two incarnations: one normal, one with full-on vampire face. I haven't yet seen it in person, but the photos look pretty darn good.

Series 3 has already been set for a June release; the two figures will be Cordelia and Xander. A Series 4, featuring Drusilla, Anya and a Gentleman (from the "Hush" episode), will follow. Hardcore fans note that Sideshow Toys is debuting 12" versions of the Buffster and three different Gentlemen in June as well.

Troy Brownfield is the Editor-in-Chief of Shotgun Reviews. He wishes that everyone on the show would just give Spike a break; vampires aren't all that bad.
