Vol. 5 Paradise and Pain

I will start by saying that this review is incomplete, incomplete in that it is only a review of two tapes, or six episodes. I would give a complete review of the series, but as it stands, I can only discuss these six episodes, since they are all I have seen of EscaFlowne.

Now I know right now several of you are already clicking on to another review, either because of my previous statement, or because you remember the hacked up version on Fox. But you stop for a moment and consider this. Here I am, watching an anime I know I should have watched a long time ago. I’m starting the series dead smack in the middle. I know the hype, which to me is a turn off. The more you hype something to me, the less likely I will like it. On top of that, I know I should never trust an anime that has been aired on national American television.

Well, I actually liked this. I liked this one so much I’m probably going to do my best to either persuade Bandai to let me review the rest, or I’m going to have to go out and buy them, just so I can have some closure.

As I said, I don’t feel I can really review this whole thing fairly though. I started with episode 15 and, therefore, had missed a lot of story. Much of my time was spent trying to puzzle out what was going on. But putting that aside, I could see this was a well scripted, moving plot, with plenty of action, intrigue, and romance to keep all interested. Definitely high fantasy, the mix of mecha and magic only adds to this story. It left me hungry for what I missed and what was to come.

Vol. 6 Fate and Fortune

As for artwork, it’s good. At times its average, but for the most part it falls in that good to better range. If you don’t mind pointy-nosed characters, then you will have plenty of amazing graphics, body art, and special effects to satisfy. For an OAV, it’s quite impressive.

This is where I have to end the review. I definitely feel that this anime is a keeper, but it is part of a greater series. Think of it this way: If I’m impressed with episodes 15 through 20, imagine what the first 14 are like, or the last 6. I can only hope that the quality was like this throughout the series. Recommendation: save up that money, this and all its brothers are definitely worth the cost. BUY IT!

Finally, I apologize to those that I did not listen to about this title. It definitely lives up to the hype.
