Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040
Vol. 11-12
Review

McCammon
Its not
the original, nor is it the crash. Instead it’s a new version
that is actually set before the first series and is considered
a separate incarnation. Following me so far? Good, cause I
was totally lost at first.
Okay,
you’ve got familiar faces, if not darker spirits, and you
have a new face to introduce it all to you. We are drawn into
the story by following her into her meeting the Knight Sabers.
From here, things happen, and the series does show some strong
story lines and seems to have developed nicely by the time
you get to Volumes 11 and 12.
Again,
I won’t review storyline, because it would be futile when
you are only reviewing a part of the whole. You have no idea
what came before or what comes after, so I cant be fair. All
I can really tell you is that all the Bubblegum Crisis
series are well known, and for good reason. I won’t hype it
to you, but instead tell you truthfully, you should look at
it if you haven’t done so already.
I tend
to think that this anime is the weaker of the Bubblegum
versions out there, and it’s really a supplement in my mind
for those that liked the characters and needed it to go on.
There are some weaker changes to the characters and the technology
that I found to be more of plot devices. That always bothers
me when a character is altered to move the plot along.
The animation
is good and the level of production quite high. Voices are
also fine and the opening song is excellent. Again, the only
problem is that some of the action feels very staged, with
team members suddenly going `dumb' to meet a plot requirement.
The action animation varies in quality as well, but is generally
good and sometimes very good. In general this is a fun watch,
takes some risks in modifying characters, which may well pay
off. Released from ADV films, its currently available in store
right now. Recommendation: Rent it first.
