What
do you get when you mix a young gymnast turned showgirl, a
latent psionic ability, street alley thugs, vampires, ninjas
and aliens? You get the world of Ace Of Diamonds. Ace
Of Diamonds comes from the mind of Glenn Porzig and is
published by Lone Star Press. It mixes traditional comic book
themes in the backdrop of the glitz, glamour & high-stakes
mayhem of Las Vegas. The main character---Danika Nolan, who's
stage name is Ace of Diamonds struggles to make a living
working as a casino dancer. She also struggles to learn more
about her swiss cheese past (she was adopted as a youth).
Ace also deals with her newfound celebrity as a hero, due
to a sudden twist of fate, her powers manifest themselves
in public. Adding to this already combustible mix is her mysterious
adoptive father--a black ops secret agent with more secrets
to hide than Oliver North.
Ace
of Diamonds has a little more to offer than big
boobs, longlegs and skimpy outfits but, those are its obvious
key selling points. For some strange reason fan boys & even
some fan girls (for that matter) really dig hot cartoonish
looking strippers....ahem...showgirls with supernatural powers.
(Don't believe me, just look at the success of Witchblade
or Alley Baggett's Alley Cat.) From a visual point
of view, the art work is excellent. It's detailed and lifelike.
What sets Ace of Diamonds apart from the other T&A
comics, is the strength in the side characters. Her closet
ally, Bloodlust is a wild-woman on a mission. With a body
like Wonder Woman, the demeanor of The Punisher and the wit
of Gambit, Bloodlust is most deserving of her own comic. Magnum
is the dynamite diva with the body that makes "you wish she
was real" and the duo of Hammer & Sickle is a definite force
to be reckoned.
Ace
of Diamonds provides plenty of eye-candy, but you may
find the story a bit average. Her super-hero lifestyle is
so-so, her showgirl lifestyle is the most intriguing. (Note
to all fan-boys: Ace looks real good soaking wet...and yes,
she kicks really high!).
