Four
Questions with Troy Brownfield
Come
on, you know who Warren Ellis is. After celebrating the return
of Planetary and the success of Orbiter this
year, Ellis also made a deal to turn Global Frequency
into a TV series. It doesn't hurt that GF was one of
the year's best comics as well. In '04, look for the end of
Transmetropolitan to finally be collected, as well
as trades for other projects, like Red. Check out all
the good word at WarrenEllis.com.
With that
noted, Mr. Ellis recently checked in with the online comics
review and journalism community. He was willing to answer
four questions for each person who got them in on time. Obviously,
we took a shot, and Mr. Ellis rejoined with the brevity that
was the intent of this feature in the first place.

THE BIG Q&A
SGR:
Based
on your awareness of impending projects at this point, what
one thing outside of your own work would you direct the comic-buying
public toward in 2004? ?
Warren Ellis: I
have no awareness of other people's projects, I'm sorry. I'm
so far out of the loop these days it's not even funny.
SGR:Do
you believe that things like graphic novel reviews in Publisher's
Weekly and Top Ten Lists in Time magazine are actively opening
up new audiences, or is it more preaching to the converted?
WE:
Do you know lots of comics readers who buy Publishers
Weekly, then? I don't know any. TIME has an international
circulation in the millions, but we all know millions of people
do not go in to comics stores. These have to be opening new
doors. You think forty thousand comics store regulars bought
JIMMY CORRIGAN?
SGR:
Are things like the Castillo conviction in Texas just a rare
occurance, or are they pointing the way to larger and more
difficult legal issues ahead for retailers and publishers?
WE: Those have always been with us, and will always
be with us. They are not new, and there will be more.
SGR:
Does anyone have a half-assed chance in hell of dethroning
Bush in the forthcoming election?
WE:
No-one who's being stood up by your Democratic party,
no. It's pretty clear the DNC has thrown away 2004 in return
for a clear shot in 2008.
Obviously,
we'd like to thank Mr. Ellis for taking the time with even
four questions. Pay attention to his aborning works via his
site, including some interesting video game projects. The
man's much more than just good comics, folks.
As always,
if you have someone that you'd like to suggest for a Big Question,
let Troy know at psikotyk@aol.com.
